William Catterall Carr (17 Feb 1907 to 16 Jan 1978)

The Life Story of Stephen and Sarah Jane (Catterall) Carr
By: Julie Marie (Allen) Carr

Part One: Stephen and Sarah Jane (Catterall) Carr and family
Chapter 4: Stephen and Sarah’s Children born in England

Section 4.4: William Catterall Carr (17 Feb 1906 to 16 Jan 1978)

According to the Social Security Index, William Carr was born on 17 February 1906.  William is the first born son of Stephen and Sarah (Catterall) Carr. He received his mother’s maiden name has a middle name.

He left for Canada when he was about 4 years old. He then went to USA when he was around 6 years old. He of course experienced the same stuff has his sister Hannah Bell, Elizabeth Leah, and Evelyn Devine. The death of a sister would have been a very hard thing to handle at the age of 6. I wonder if he understood why his dad kept leaving the family. This must have been hard to comprehend. According to his border crossing card, he had light hair and blue eyes.

When the 1920 census was taken, William was still living at home with his parents in in Benwood Ward 2, Marshall, West Virginia. He was listed has 15 years olds. By the time the 1930 census was taken, William had moved out, but as of right now I have not found him in the 1930 census -- please if you know where this William Carr is in 1930 email me at juliecarrfamilyresearch@gmail.com.

The family had a very special Christmas (December 25th) in 1936 at Wheeling, West Virginia, USA. On top of all the normal family activities that were going on that day, William got married to Mary Ellen Jennings, the daughter of William and Alice M Jennings. I wish I had some articles about the wedding, but truth be told I don’t have much information on William Carr. I do have a marriage certificate for this marriage.

The marriage certificate does not state if William had been married before Mary; however, he was not living at home in 1930 and I can't find him anywhere. of course, William Carr is a very common name.

William and Mary Ellen (Jennings) Carr had 3 infant sons, who died before the age of 2 months. I did not get these names or even the fact that they existed past down. In fact I only found out about them through the search.labs.familysearch.org website -- West Virginia Deaths. I couldn’t imagine nor do I want to ever experience how they must have felt.

With the first two entries combined, it makes the tragedies even worse than the death of one child. The twins, William Jr. and Ralph Jennings Carr, were born on 08 November 1939 in Wheeling, West Virginia. On 01 December 1939 at the Ohio Valley General Hospital in Wheeling, West Virginia, William Jr died. He was buried on 02 December 1939 at Peninsula cemetery in Wheeling, West Virginia. This would be hard enough to handle, but to make things even harder on 14 December 1939 at the Ohio Valley General Hospital in Wheeling, West Virginia more tragedy hit the Carr Family, when Ralph died, too. He was buried on 15 December 1939 at Peninsula cemetery in Wheeling, West Virginia. (information gotten from a West Virginia Death Certificate).

About a year later, William and Mary had another son. They named him William, also. This William was born on 02 Nov 1940 in Wheeling, West Virginia. Unlike the twins, he at least experienced Christmas with the family, but not the new year as he died on 30 December 1940 at 2637 Market St, Rear, Wheeling, West Virginia. On 31 December 1940, he was also buried at Peninsula cemetery in Wheeling, West Virginia. I do not know at this time if there are Tombstones for the 3 babies, nor do I know if they were buried next to one another. But I am sure it was a hard time for William and Mary to get through. (information gotten from a West Virginia Death Certificate).

William also had 2 more sons and 3 daughters. Two of these children were adopted by his younger sister, who happened to have the same name has his wife -- Mary Ellen. At this time, I do not know a lot about these children, and do not want to list any information on those who are alive. I do know that Harry Carr, who was born on 01 January 1943 at Wheeling, West Virginia, died on 20 February 2005 at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

In the 1930 Census, Eva and Emmit Hornbeck is living in Bellaire, Belmont, Ohio, USA. I’m not for sure why the two older children weren’t listed in the household. Maybe whoever answered the questions, misunderstood and thought (s)he was suppose to list the adults living there. There is a roomer named Robert Milligan -- age 65 living with them. I believe Emmit’s mom Mary Milligan is living next-door. I also think that this Robert Milligan is Samuel Milligan’s (Emmit’s step dad) dad.

Eva gave the info and stated that her and her husband was living at the same house, but the kids were living at the same place in 1935. So many the children weren't living with them in the 1930 census either? So many questions so little time.

When the 1920 census was taken, Elizabeth was still living at home with her parents in in Benwood Ward 2, Marshall, West Virginia. On 28 February 1921 in Wheeling, Ohio, West Virginia, Elizabeth married her first husband, Nicholas Vondouris -- better known as Nick. He was born on 27 July 1900 in Greece.

Elizabeth and Nick had 4 children together; however, only three lived.

  1. John N. Vondouris (29 June 1921 West Virginia - 23 Nov 1983 Florida) was married twice -- First to a Margaret Stoker and second to a Lillian Mehozonek on 27 Sept 1947 at Weirton, Hancock, West Virginia, USA. He had 2 girls with Margaret and a boy and a girl with Lillian -- I have more information on his kids but I do not know if the are still living or not so will not state their names here. If you want more information on this or any other family please email me at juliecarrfamilyresearch@gmail.com. I also have a marriage certificate for John and Lillian located at the following website. The picture on the right was taken in 1933 and is of Micheal Carr (the tallest), who is my husband's dad and John, Vincent, and Kathleen -- Elizabeth's three kids.
  2. Vincent G. Vondouris (05 May 1923 West Virginia - 12 Mar 1989 Arizona) was married many times and I don’t know all of them. Here are some names that was past down from some other relatives: Catherine, Marian, who had one son, Chris, who also had one son, and Lemma L. Mitchell on 28 March 1947 marriage certificate located at the following website. Vincent was in the army and was buried at National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona; 23029 North Cave Creek Road Phoenix, AZ 85024. I don’t know the order of the marriages or when the kids were born. I do know their names, but again I do not know if they are living or not, so therefore I will not include there names here.
  3. Kathleen Leah Vondouris (17 Jun 1925 West Virginia - 21 Aug 1985 Ohio) was married Sam Elich on 27 Sept 1947 at Weirton, Hancock, West Virginia, USA, in a double ceremony with her brother John. I bet that was a long but joyful day for everyone involved. The marriage certificate is located at the following website. Kathleen had 2 daughter, who did not have children. Again if you need more information let me know by emailing me at juliecarrfamilyresearch@gmail.com.
  4. Infant Vondouris (02 Jun 1929 West Virginia - 02 Jan 1929 West Virginia). I found the death cetificate for this little baby at the following website. The baby, who was a male, only lived 5 minutes and his aunt Hannah Carr was the informant for the death certificate.

On 2 September 1928, Nick was killed from a car wreck in Maryland. This event in Elizabeth’s life was hard for her. It made her a single pregnant mother of three during the depression. Elizabeth moved in with her parents, and when the 1930 census was taken she and her three kids were still living with her parents in Wheeling, Ohio, West Virginia, USA. She ended up losing the baby on 2 Jan 1929 in Wheeling, Ohio, West Virginia.

Elizabeth got married two more times. She married Emmanuel Jacovidis on 02 May 1931 in Wheeling, Ohio, West Virginia, USA. Emmanuel Jacovidis was born on 21 Jan 1902 in Greece and died on 06 Apr 1971 in Ohio. Emmanual and Elizabeth didn’t have children.

She then got married to Shirl Stephen on 06 Nov 1971. We don’t have much information on Shirl, but we do know she didn’t have children with him. She got a divorce from him on 09 July 1974.

Elizabeth Leah Carr died on 10 Oct 1983 at Phoenix, Maricopa, Arizona, USA. She was buried at Ft. Steuben Estates in Wintersville, Jefferson, Ohio, USA. The year 1983 was hard for this family as Elizabeth died in October and her John died in November. This must have been hard on the surviving family members. I would like to find obituaries for any of the family member listed here so please email me at juliecarrfamilyresearch@gmail.com with any extra information.

Hannah Bell Carr (15 Sept 1901 to 17 Apr 1967)

The Life Story of Stephen and Sarah Jane (Catterall) Carr
By: Julie Marie (Allen) Carr

Part One: Stephen and Sarah Jane (Catterall) Carr and family
Chapter 4: Stephen and Sarah’s Children born in England

Section 4.1: Hannah Bell Carr (15 Sept 1901 to 17 Apr 1967)

Hannah Bell, the daughter of Stephen and Sarah Jane (Catterall) Carr was born on 15 Sept 1901 Spennymoor, Durham, England. She was their first born child and of all the days for Sarah to deliver it had to be her 1 year wedding anniversary. I guess that would have been an easy date to remember. I feel sorry for Sarah to have to be spending her wedding anniversary with pain, but I’m sure she felt all the joy a mother could want when she held Hannah for the first time.

Hannah was only ten when her dad left for Canada. He left his family behind, but not for long before having them come over to met up with him. I bet the few months that they were separated was hard on not only the kids, but the parents, too. Before she turned 11, she had already made a trip across the ocean, and lost a sibling on the way. I wish I could have been a part of the family earlier so I could have asked her daughter if her mom ever talked about the hardship she faced as a child.

Hannah arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 22 September 1911. I can picture her and her siblings running up to their dad -- happy to see him yet sad about their baby sister. I bet they had a lot of emotions running through them, and maybe not even know how to explain it all.

On 13 May 1913, she crossed into the United States of America through Vanceboro, Maine. She then still had to make her way to her father, who had left a few months earlier. I bet that would have been a rough trip for Hannah’s mom and 6 children, but they did make it back to one another.

For some reason Hannah’s mom put her age down as 10, which would make her born in 1903. However, on the 1911 England Census she was also 10, which would make her born in 1901 -- the year that was past down. According to the Manifest card from when Hannah crossed from Canada to Vanceboro, Maine, she had brown hair and green eyes. We do not know her height from this card, but at least we know a little about her appearance.

Sometime before February 1918, Hannah Bell Carr met a boy by the name of Howard. She never married him, but she did have her only child with him. Hannah named her daughter Sarah, and by the time the 1920 census was taken Hannah and Sarah was living with Hannah’s parents in Benwood Ward 2, Marshall, West Virginia.

Sarah was born in February 1918 in Ohio, USA. She married three times, but had no living children, it is family stories that she had 3 stillborn babies. I have found 2 death certificates for babies born and died to Sara and her first husband (Steve). She then married Charles Ellis, and after he died she married Ben Stenger.

Sometime after 1930, Hannah married Harry Jay Oden, the son of Elmer S and Alice Rebecca Oden. They had no children together. They stayed married until Hannah’s death on 17 April 1967. Harry got married for the third time to a Helen Wright, before Hannah’s marriage Harry was married to Irene Welch on 23 Aug 1924. I do have Harry's marriage certificate to Irene, and the 1930 census with Harry, Irene, Alyce, and Mary R. If you need these, please email me at juliecarrfamilyresearch@gmail.com and I will email you a copy.

I do not have the actual death certificate for Hannah, but I do have the following from ancestry.com. She was buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Wheeling, Ohio, West Virginia, USA. My husband was born in June 1967, so he never met his Aunt Hannah.

Stephen and Sarah’s life together in England (1900 to 1911)

The Life Story of Stephen and Sarah Jane (Catterall) Carr
By: Julie Marie (Allen) Carr

Part One: Stephen and Sarah Jane (Catterall) Carr and family
Chapter 3: Stephen and Sarah’s life together in England (1900 to 1911)

Needless to say, at this point we don’t know how Stephen and Sarah met, but we do know that they got married on the 15th day of September 1900. This date along with the fact that they got married in ENGLAND was handed down from generation to generation. For some reason, Stephen and Sarah never mentioned where they were married other than England -- as if England was a small area. Yeah Right! And again England got us no where.

I was able to locate Stephen and Sarah’s marriage entry in the index pretty quickly, but I still didn’t know how to order it or how much it would cost. Then someone informed me about General Register Office for England and Wales. I saved up enough money to order it and found out that I was for sure following the correct family.

It had father for Stephen as William Carr and father for Sarah as Joseph Catterall. There was a female witness JANE MILLER -- at this point I do not know who this could be. Another witness was a male witness MICHAEL WILLIAM CATTERALL, who was listed on the 1881 England Census as the son of Joseph and Isabella Catterall.

The name Michael William is special in another way. My husband, Michael, and I decided to name our son Michael William. At the time it was because Michael is both my husband’s and his dad’s name, and William is my dad’s, my brother’s, my grandpa’s middle name, and my great-grandfather’s first name. So as you can see Michael William was a very big family name, then when my son was 12 and half we found out that his great-great Uncle’s name was Michael William so yet another family reason for my son to be called Michael William Carr.

Stephen and Sarah was listed as a married couple for the first time in the 1901 England Census. The following transcription is provided at the following website

Record for Stephen Carr.

During the next ten years, Stephen and Sarah experienced both happy and sad memories. There were family members, who died and those who were born. In fact Stephen and Sarah had six children before the 1911 census came out. They had the following children*:

Hannah Bell Carr (15 Sept 1901 to 17 Apr 1967)
Elizabeth Leah Carr (21 Aug 1903 to 10 Oct 1983)
Evelyn Divine Carr (06 Jul 1905 to 21 June 1961)
William Catterall Carr (17 Feb 1907 to 16 Jan 1978)
Joseph Catterall Carr (14 Jan 1908 to 17 May 1963)
Mary Jane Carr (Oct 1910 to Sept 1911)

*I will be having a section for each of these children discussing their marriages, children, grandchildren, and deaths. I will not list living descendants (unless they are in a printed document such as an obituary); however, if you think you are related to them please email me at juliecarrfamilyresearch@gmail.com, so we can share information.

I do not have any picture of Stephen and Sarah during their younger years. At this point I do not have any baby pictures of any of the Carr children, but hopefully some day I will be able to include them.

I only have two children and have a house full. I couldn’t image having six of them under the age of 10; however, this was more common in the early 1900’s than it is today. I know some families who had children to help with the chores, but I don’t know the situation on why Stephen and Sarah had the children. I want to think because Stephen and Sarah really loved the kids. They had 4 daughters and 2 sons during the time they lived in England. I wonder how it felt to live in a house where there was so many females compared to males. My family is even 2 males and 2 females, I would say perfect, but every family has their ups and downs and I don’t think it has to do with how many males or females live there.
(Update: as of July 29, 2011 my family has grown to 3 males and 2 females)

They had some hard time in their life and decided to leave for Canada soon after the 1911 Census was taken. The next chapter will discuss them leaving for Canada and living in Canada. They had one child while living in Canada, and she to will have her section all to herself.

The last England Census they are in is the 1911. My husband's 1st cousin, Mary Lou sent me a copy of the 1911 census. I will be scanning and posting this as soon as I can. It's really cool having the entire family written in one page.

I found the household at a pay per view site called 1911census.co.uk and findmypast.co.uk. Here’s the household from oldest to youngest - I found the family with searching Carr living with different people until I found them - the best search is Carr last name - living with William Catherall and then Carr last name living with Eveadevine. Sarah Jane Catterall (Birth to 1899)

The Life Story of Stephen and Sarah Jane (Catterall) Carr
By: Julie Marie (Allen) Carr

Part One: Stephen and Sarah Jane (Catterall) Carr and family
Chapter 2: Sarah Jane Catterall (Birth to 1899)

Sarah Jane Catterall was born to Joseph and Isabel (Brunskell) Catterall on 16 February 1882. According to Sarah Jane’s entry of birth {received today -- 03 May 2010}, she was born at New Herrington, Durham, England with a Sub-district of Houghton Le Spring. Sarah Jane’s dad was listed as Joseph Cattrall and her mom Isabella had the name Bell Cattrall formerly Brunskell. I bet you can’t guess what Joseph’s occupation was -- yep Coal Miner.

I still need to find out if she was baptized, if so when and where. I wonder want it was like to be born in 1882 in Durham, England. This will also be something I do some research on -- where there housewives, who came out or neighbors -- maybe even other family members. Did the father go in the room or have to wait like so many here in the United States.

The first and only census Sarah Jane Catterall was listed on has a child was the 1891 England Census at the age of 9 years old living at 46 George St., West Herrington, Co. Durham. She was living with not only her parents (Joseph and Bell), and her siblings (William, Benjamin, herself, and Hannah), but her Grandma Hannah Taylor -- states mother-in-law on relationship to head of household. I wonder what Sarah Jane felt about living with her grandma. Did she enjoy hearing stories about “back when I was a child.” or was she more interested in playing than listening.

There is a transcription at the following Website:

Stay tuned to see what happens in the next ten years? What does Sarah Catterall do with her life? At this point in my research I don‘t have much of what happened in Sarah‘s childhood, but little by little we will break down the brick walls. By the way, a little hint is that she gets married on 15 Sept 1900.

Stephen Carr (Birth to 1899)

The Life Story of Stephen and Sarah Jane (Catterall) Carr
By: Julie Marie (Allen) Carr

Part One: Stephen and Sarah Jane (Catterall) Carr and family
Chapter 1:  Stephen Carr (Birth to 1899)

Stephen Carr was born to William and Leah (Ferguson) Carr on
12 April 1878 at High Row, Pelton Fell, {sub-district of Chester le Street}, Durham, England. I received the Certified Copy of an Entry of Birth today 7 May 2010, which gave me the exact date of birth and his parents names of William Carr and Leah Carr, formerly Ferguson. These names let me know that I am following the correct Stephen Carr.

I got the following information on Stephen Carr’s Baptism from the following website. I have not seen the original document -- Baptisms Pelton Holy Trinity: Stephen Carr baptized 7 Aug 1878 son of William and Leah Carr. Someday, my goal is to contact the church and get copies of the baptism -- there is other family members, who were baptized there also. You will know when this goal as been completed because I will post it here.

Thanks Chris and Ann for telling me about Google Image, I am now able to include picture of the church, where so many of my husband’s relatives attended. I’m sure the times were different and rough, but I can picture in my mind little Stephen being held by his parents and brought up to the altar, where the priest sprinkled water on his head. I wonder what prayer was said over him, and how many relatives attended the service.

The first census Stephen Carr was listed on was the 1881 England census, at the age of 2. They were living at Pelton, Pelton Fell, Chester Le St, Pelton Holy Trinity.

When I first started looking at the 1881 England Census, I had looked at the following Stephen so many times I can’t count them. However, I didn’t have enough information on him to declare that this was my husband’s Grandpa so I put it in my notes and went on. It was really great to finally be able to say I saw Grandpa Stephen’s name as a 2 year old. I also was able to complete another generation with the parent names of William and Leah Carr, and Stephen’s siblings William, Mary, and John. This was all information that up until I found this census and the 1891 England census, we had no clue of. I feel like so much information as come by way in the last few months, that Stephen must have really wanted to be found. Something I’m going to do is research this part of England to see what it looked like and what it felt like to live there in 1880’s. If you have already done such research and would like to contribute to the blog, please email me at juliecarrfamilyresearch@gmail.com, and I will post it giving you credit and link this part to that entry.

I wonder what happened in the next ten years of Little Stephen’s life. What did he do during those years? Did he go to school? Did he play with his siblings or was he to busy working? As you can see in the 1881 England Census, Stephen’s dad William was a Coal Miner -- How old was Stephen when he started working in the Coal Mines? In the 1891 England census, William Carr and his son William are working in the coal mines. I still wonder how old Stephen was when he started working in the Coal Mines. I know some was as young as 12 year old, if that’s the case then Stephen would be starting to work soon. I couldn’t imagine my son (13 years old) working in a coal mine. So many question, so little time to answer. I really wish I had some stories to go with the time period, but at least we broke the brick wall and found his family.

In the 1891 England Census, Stephen was 12 year old living in Bedlington, Bedlingtonshire, Bedlington, Moreph, St. Cuthbert, Northumberland, England. One of the saddest parts of Stephen’s life is that his mom died by the time he was 12 years old. In fact, Leah (Ferguson) Carr died when Stephen was only 3 years old. I wonder how Stephen felt did he understand when his mommy disappeared. Did he cry? Did he act out like so many kids today do when parents pass away at an early age. With the family research I have done, it is very common for fathers to get remarried -- however, according to the 1891 England Census, it was only William Carr and his 4 children, William, Mary, Stephen, and Albert John living there. Does this mean that William never remarried? Or was there a second wife that also died or left. Sometimes it’s great to find documents with your family, but even when they answer some question -- they leave some unanswered and brings new questions to be answered. Not only the questions and answers, but they bring tears to your eyes. I can feel the pain Grandpa Stephen and his siblings felt without their mother. I have so many memories with my mom, I couldn’t imagine not having her.
